My husband and I adopted a Terrier mix and
I learned very quickly that he was in charge and that I was his pet! After he passed I wanted to learn how to train a dog that would lead to a more balanced relationship.
I moved to Green Valley and decided that I wanted to pursue my interest by volunteering at the local shelter.
I started as a dog handler. I became very interested in the dogs that were shut down or overly excited and wanted to learn how I could help them by training and re-training them of behaviors that were keeping them from being adopted.
Under the guidance of the trainers who now lead Pawsitive Affects
I learned to observe dog behavior and body language which opened a whole new world of understanding dogs and how I could help by using the positive training techniques I was taught.
I quickly learned how satisfying it was to earn the trust of a very shy and fearful dog and was awarded a designation for working and training them.
I later earned a designation for working with rowdy and fearful dogs which proved to be satisfying teaching them ways to be calm and using enrichment to burn off energy.
I joined the training team at the shelter where I have taken on the responsibility of training volunteers, assessing for designations, leading a post adoption training team,
and training and looking after the welfare of the shelter dogs
I am working closely with post adopted dogs and their owners on resolving various behaviors such as leash reactivity, fear, recall, basic training and anxiety.
I am working on my receiving my CPT-KA certification
I am passionate about the work of Positive Affects and how it is changing lives of the dogs and the humans. My goal is to be part of helping the community in their efforts to raising dogs to live their happiest lives with their humans.
